B Corp Launches in the UK
Wouldn’t it be great if businesses made a positive contribution towards people and the planet as well as making profits? Well…this is exactly what the B Corp (Benefit Corporation) movement is all about. Handy hey!?
What is a B Corp?
A B Corp is a company that not only cares about making a profit, but is also passionate about doing social and environmental good. The movement started in the US in 2008 and is already fast-growing worldwide.
In 1988, Ben & Jerry’s was one of the first companies in the world to place a social mission in equal importance to it’s product and economic missions, when we penned our three part mission statement. This three-part mission ensures that our business seeks to generate a social and environmental return, as well as an economic one. Then true to our pioneering spirit, we become the first wholly owned subsidiary to certify as B Corp when we completed the B Corp US certification back in 2012!
Why the UK?
All over the world businesses are jumping at the opportunity join the B Corp community, which currently exists in 39 countries with over 1,400 B Corp certified businesses.
With momentum gathering in the UK, B Corp UK officially launched earlier this month, with over sixty businesses having already completed the certification process, to earn the stamp of being one of the UK’s first B Corps.
The B Corp Role
B Corps share a commitment to redefine the meaning of success, by conducting ‘good business’. By meeting standards set out by B Lab, businesses can gain B Corp certification. This stamp of approval demonstrates their commitment to consider their social and environment impact on customers, partners and communities.
Businesses of all shapes and sizes play a part in this inspiring vision, including both Patagonia and the social enterprise, On Purpose. Joining the B Corp community provides the opportunity for like-minded people to connect, but most importantly, with the chance to use business as a force for change — something we not only think is pretty cool, but also crucial to the future of our world.
