Today, Ben & Jerry’s was invited by the UNFCCC to Bonn, Germany where over 4,000 international delegates met to negotiate one of the most complex problems our world has ever faced, and to prepare an agreement to hopefully be finalised at the Paris Climate Change summit in December!
Ben & Jerry’s European Director, Jochanan Senf (below, left), or the ‘Chunky Chief’ as he’s also known, was there to speak with UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres, along with other journalists and delegates. He was also there to give the latest scoop on our global Climate Change campaign, “Save Our Swirled”. Jochanan spoke about why, as a company, we’ve made climate change our primary social mission focus, and why we’re trying to use the power of our business to highlight the critical climate battle.
We’ve looked at the impact of our own business, to invest in responsible energy sourcing, reduce our carbon footprint, and we have imposed our own internal carbon tax. But the sad truth is that this problem is too big and too urgent to be solved by individual voluntary corporate action. Together, as Businesses, citizens, and policy makers, we must accelerate the transition towards a decarbonised future! And, you know what? That’s exactly why we launched our “Save Our Swirled” Campaign; to mobilise hundreds of thousands of fans, consumers, and citizens to join the climate change movement, and demand the transition to 100% clean energy by 2050!
Of course, we were also there to do what we do best; scoop that latest euphoric Ben & Jerry’s flavour. Because what would a Ben & Jerry’s advocacy campaign be without an awareness raising flavour? This one’s special though; it’s not just any flavour, it’s a flavour launched in support of our activist campaign!
As a company, we learned long ago that one of the best ways to reach out to fans with a message is right where we meet them...in the freezer aisle! Our Chunky Chief and the Ben & Jerry’s herd brought along some scoops of our latest concoction: tangy raspberry ice cream, swirled with rivers of marshmallow and raspberry, and white & dark chocolatey cone-shaped chunks.
As the road to Paris gets shorter, the issue of climate change becomes even more pressing. The time to act is now! As our co-founder Ben Cohen always said: “if it’s melted, it’s ruined”. That’s as true for our world as it is for our ice cream!
