Our Fairtrade Communities!

So just where do Ben & Jerry’s Fairtrade ingredients come from…? The answer: all over the world! Ben & Jerry’s uses dozens of Fairtrade ingredients, from our natural flavourings to our euphoric chunks and swirls. And by choosing Fairtrade, we have a positive impact all over the world! So, as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, we wanted to lift the lid on where our wonderful ingredients come from, and just how the Fairtrade model is supporting social and environmental justice issues on the ground.

  1. Fairtrade Cocoa

We source the majority of our Fairtrade cocoa powder from cooperatives in the Ivory Coast and Ghana. In recent years, these producers have used Fairtrade premiums to invest in health care, women's empowerment, micro-credit programs, rural schools and environmental conservation, meaning that Chocolate Fudge Brownie is playing a role in alleviating poverty!

  2. Fairtrade Vanilla

We produced the world's first Fairtrade certified Vanilla ice cream back in 2006! Our vanilla is sourced from Fairtrade certified vanilla farmers in Uganda and Madagascar. The business of producing Fairtrade certified vanilla has enabled many small-scale Ugandan farmers to link themselves through an independent network, whilst maintaining the existing character of the wild and hilly forests of their land.

  3. Fairtrade Sugar

Some of our Fairtrade sugar comes from Belize, which has become a leading producer of Sugar. Sugar is a very important crop here, the industry employing up to 85% of the rural population in some parts of the country. Fairtrade has helped cooperatives invest in both soil and water improvements, along with other environmental projects, and farmers have improved their yields whilst benefiting from Fairtrade prices for their harvest.

  4. Fairtrade Bananas

Ben & Jerry’s Fairtrade bananas come from the El Guabo cooperative in Ecuador, with 300 member workers growing bananas on small-scale farms in the El Oro province! Fairtrade social premiums have allowed farmers to invest in health services, primary education and road improvements. This all means that Satisfy My Bowl, one of our bestselling banana flavours, really does make a difference for those communities that need it most!

  5. Fairtrade Coffee

Ben & Jerry’s Fairtrade coffee comes from the Huatusco Union cooperative in Mexico. Over the past five years, we’ve sourced more than 300,000 pounds of Fairtrade coffee!
