Did you know that on the 3rd May there are local elections in London?
Maybe you did, maybe you didn’t, but either way make sure the date’s in your diary!
At Ben & Jerry’s, we believe: “democracy only works when it works for everyone!” And the mechanism of making sure everyone has an equal voice? Well that’s voting – each citizen’s right to head to the polls to cast a ballot for the candidate of their choice. Yet certain people are being frozen out of the picture.
Many groups are under-registered, some do not know they have a right to vote or why this election matters. At the last all-out London local elections the turn out was very low, around 39% - that’s a lot of people not getting their voices heard.
That’s why for this May’s London Local Elections we’ve joined forces again with our pals at Hope Not Hate to ensure Londoner’s don’t get frozen out of democracy.
First things first, what are these elections for?
Londoners will be voting to elect councillors – people who decide what happens to their local services - in the 32 boroughs, plus, Mayors of Hackney, Lewisham, Newham and Tower Hamlets will be directly elected.
Local councillors are elected to represent their local community and make decisions that will impact on the day to day life of every resident – including you!
So, who can vote?
British citizens, qualifying Commonwealth nationals and EU nationals can vote.
To vote you need to have registered by the April 17th deadline. It’s super easy, just grab your national insurance number and register to vote now!
