Watts up with your energy supplier?

July 13, 2018

Flick the light switch, plug your phone in, pop the oven on, switch on the TV... The classic night in - we do it all without a second thought.

And yet, of course, stop to think, and all that electricity has to come from somewhere. From the pylons to the wires, surging across the country before it gets to your home.

Watt’s the deal with our electricity?

In the UK, our electricity is generated from loads of different sources. There’s gas, oil, coal, nuclear, wind, solar and more. Last year, gas made up 40% of our electricity, renewable energy like solar and biomass accounted for 30% and nuclear gave 20%. Coal and oil (and the mysterious *other*) gave us the final 10%

Burning fossil fuels like gas, oil and coal pollutes our air and warms our planet whereas natural and renewable resources like sun, wind, and wave power are clean. We can’t tackle climate change on a national level without lots more clean power.

If you buy your electricity from one of the big suppliers - the Big 6 - chances are right now your dough is paying for a whole lot of this dirty power. They need plenty of polluting power plants to meet the demand of all their customers.

Watt’s the Solution?

One of the simplest things you can help our planet is to switch to a clean energy supplier.

Switching is really easy. There’s no admin, and no one has to come to your house to change your plugs. In fact, switch on your lights and you’ll get electricity just like you did before - regardless of whether it’s sunny or windy!

The only difference is that you know you’re supporting clean, renewable energy!

As clean suppliers get new customers, they’ll be building new solar farms, hydro turbines, and wind farms. One switch = one more bit of clean energy. Doesn’t sound a lot, but if thousands of us switch, it means LOADS more clean energy!

The more clean power we generate (and the less dirty power), the cleaner the whole UK electricity system and ‘the grid’ will be. People power works so let’s make a real difference.

Switch up your Supplier

Switching can feel a bit daunting but our pals, the energy activists over at the Big Clean Switch have made it super simple.

With a few clicks, you can help build a cleaner, brighter future. Not only will you be saving the planet but you’re likely to save yourself some dough too.
