This February, among all the roses, teddies and chocolates you might have spotted a couple of green hearts.
In the lead up to Valentine’s day people around the country are making and displaying green hearts in windows, gardens and shop fronts as part of a campaign called Show the Love. The green hearts are a fun and creative way to help start a conversation about climate change and show love for the things we don’t want to lose because of it.
Protecting what we Love
Because if we think about it, climate change affects loads of the things we cherish - from flooded football pitches to our favourite migrating bird to that essential morning coffee. And of course, it’s not just about the fun stuff. Climate change is already having a profound impact on people across the world and we know that those being hit the hardest are the people with the lowest carbon emissions who are the least responsible for climate change.
Tackling climate change and climate injustice is going to need all of us - and we need to work together. One way to get started is simply talking about it.
Get Crafty
This Valentines, why not get creative and fashion a green heart window display. It can be a great conversation starter. You can use it to talk about why you want to tackle climate change and some of the things we can all do to make a difference.
If your mates are particularly crafty, you could organise a virtual green heart crafting session to make green hearts and talking about climate change while you sew/stick/draw/make a mess with (biodegradable) glitter!
And you don’t just have to talk about things climate change threatens. Why not show a bit of love for your favourite climate solution? Wind turbines, veganuary, tree planting - they all play a part in helping us to tackle climate change.
Wind turbines are a case in point. If you ask the average person the street about wind turbines, chances are they will say “well I think they’re OK but I know most other people disagree”.
But it’s not true - did you know government data shows 73% of people support wind turbines?
So talking about your favourite climate solutions can be a great way to show support. And if enough of us do it, we can build a bit of a movement around them and tackle climate change together.
And it could all start with just one conversation.
